The Rainbow Vista Trailhead Hike at Valley of Fire is a 1.0 mile out-and-back trail with an elevation gain of about 100 feet. While it may not seem like much, the terrain is mostly sand, with some loose rocks along the way, and the sun can make the canyon extremely hot. How to Get to Rainbow Vista Trail
From the visitor center, you will take the Mouse’s Tank Road/White Domes road for approximately 1.7 miles until you get to the trailhead parking lot, where you can begin your hike. From there, follow the clearly marked trail to the Fire Canyon Overlook, which is a great place to stop to take in the views.
If you are looking for more of a challenge, you can take the side trail and explore more rocky terrain and more significant elevation changes, but be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen if tackling this route in the summer months.

As you pull into the Rainbow Vista parking area, you’ll be met with stunning views of the colorful valley to the north. After taking a few photos, you start out by crossing the road and heading down the sandy trail. The uphill trek back to the parking lot was a bit difficult given the sandy terrain. However, the view of the Valley of Fire made the journey more than worth it.
What to Know About Visiting Valley of Fire
Valley of Fire State Park is located about an hour’s drive north of Las Vegas. It is also important to note that the fee is $10 per vehicle per day (or $15 for out of state visitors).
Be sure to bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen and comfortable clothing. Temperatures in the summer can exceed 100 degrees so it is important to check the weather before you make the trip.
Other activities in the area include horseback riding, rock climbing and bouldering, wildlife viewing, and photography. If you’re more of a history buff, you’ll be glad to know that the park contains countless artifacts, such as petroglyphs and ancient rock shelters, that were left behind by the native people who roamed these lands centuries ago.
